Race Report for rounds 1 and 2 of the 2010 MR2 Championship from Snetterton on 14th March.
Snetterton - Rounds 1 and 2 of the MR2 Championship 14th March 2010 Qualifying and Race One were dominated with a big oversteer problem that left the team scratching their heads. The suspension changes over winter were meant to HELP handling!
Rob qualified 12th for Race One and 15th for Race Two. A fairly uneventful Race One saw Rob gain a few places, but also lose out as the handling problems hampered the car's performance leaving him to finish 13th out of the 34 starters.
Race Two was a very different matter. The time between races had given the team chance to put their heads together and some experimental adjustments not tried by the team before were applied to the car. Rob made a reasonable getaway off the line and managed to avoid a three car collision by taking to the pit lane exit slip road, he then went on to pick up another two places through overtaking that lap. The next few laps showed that the changes to the car were the right ones to make as Rob felt much more at home with how the car was handling and this was proved with his lap times and track position.
Then the rain came again and the changing conditions caught a number of drivers out. Rob felt fine with the constantly altering track after dealing with a car that never felt the same two laps in a row all day and set about picking up more places through a combination of some brave overtaking and skilful driving to keep a good pace but also keep the car on the track. As the track dried a little Alex Lennon closed in and they enjoyed a hard but clean battle for the final 5 laps. Rob managed to keep Alex at bay and then on the last lap Alex tried a move into the second corner which Rob anticipated and altered his line to repass Alex on the exit.
This was not the end of the excitement though as Rob had to pass a backmarker into the bomb hole to keep his lead. With this he powered to the finish and a well earned 4th place. After the race Rob said "That was brilliant. After the problems in the morning, to get the car back to what it should be and then take 4th from 15th on the grid was a big effort from the whole team. Alex pushed me hard but I kept him behind me and it was nice to have a clean race when so many others suffered damage. I think this means we leave here 6th in the Championship Bring on Castle Combe!"
